Letters from Camp

This year I am participating in Camp NaNoWriMo, in an attempt to chip away at a writer’s block that has been plaguing me for a while. Like with nano last year, I’ll try to do updates here with excerpts from the day’s writing. However, since it’s a more relaxed setup, I might not actually remember to do a blog post daily (honestly I have a head like a sieve), but I’ll try!

My project is a story called The Desert Rises. My word count goal is pretty modest, at 20,000 words, but I think, with this block, it’s a good landmark to shoot for.

Word Count: 1077 / 20000

Excerpt:

Most of the time, those living outside the walls of Divali had very little reason to venture within. On Festival Day, the end of winter and the young King’s birthday sparked enough generosity to open the gates. Those poor souls who survived the winter were invited in to join the festivities as if they lived there themselves.

Even the filthy rich denizens of Middlecrown District, with their opulent estates and old money ties to the royal family, didn’t begrudge them the chance. Ness thought them so generous and kind that he only picked one satin-lined pocket out of the many available.

He had to leave some for the others making their way in, after all.
